Erste Ausgabe. Japanischsprachige Ausgabe. Durchweg halb-, ganz- und doppelseitige Holzschnitte von Kyosai Kawanabe mit zarter Farbakzentuierung in hellem Rot. Gedruckt von Tetsugoro Otsuka. Mit zweiseitiger Einleitung durch Eiki Kikakudo (1823-1904). Kyosai Kawanabe (1831-1889) wirkte in einer Zeit tiefgreifenden Wandels: Der Zusammenbruch des Tokugawa-Shogunats und die Meiji-Restauration leiteten Japans Öffnung gegenüber dem Westen und eine rasante Modernisierung ein. Als früher Vertreter der politischen Karikatur in Japan verband Kyosai traditionelles Ukiyo-e mit satirischen und oft grotesken Darstellungen von Menschen, Tieren, Skeletten und den sogenannten yokai (übernatürlichen Wesen verschiedenster Art aus dem japanischen Volksglauben). Sein Werk zeichnet sich durch virtuose Technik, scharfsinnigen Humor und eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Umbrüchen aus. Umschlag etwas berieben und knickspurig, Fußstege durchweg mit verfärbtem Wasserrand (nicht gewellt, jedoch teilweise leicht in die untere, äußere Ecke des Bildteils hineinreichend), die Holzschnitte selbst jedoch schön und kräftig erhalten. Insgesamt gutes bis sehr gutes Exemplar.

Throughout, half-, full-, and double-page woodblock prints by Kyosai Kawanabe with delicate colour accents in light red. Printed by Tetsugoro Otsuka. Includes a two-page introduction by Eiki Kikakudo (1823–1904). Kyosai Kawanabe (1831–1889) worked during a period of profound change: the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Meiji Restoration ushered in Japan’s opening to the West and rapid modernization. As an early practitioner of political caricature in Japan, Kyosai combined traditional ukiyo-e techniques with satirical and often grotesque depictions of humans, animals, skeletons, and the so-called yokai (supernatural beings of Japanese folklore). His work is distinguished by virtuosic technique, incisive humor, and a critical engagement with social upheavals.
Cover shows minor rubbing and creasing. Lower margins bear a slightly discoloured waterstain along the bottom margins (not wavy, though extending slightly into the lower outer corners of some prints). The woodblock prints themselves remain vibrant and well preserved. Overall, nearly fine copy.
